November for our WI means it’s time for the AGM followed by wine, nibbles and a quiz. After the usual singing of Jerusalem the Treasurer went through the accounts for the year followed by the Secretary’s report that normally reminds us of the interesting speakers as well as the walks, coffee mornings and visits we had enjoyed throughout the year but unfortunately because of Covid we were unable to do as much this year. What we had done had been enjoyed, either through Zoom meetings or occasional socially distanced get-togethers although we had kept in touch with telephone calls and gifts for Easter and Christmas that were delivered to all members by some of the Committee. Hopefully we will have more normal gatherings in 2022 although before the end of this year there is still our monthly coffee morning at The Roastery but unfortunately the planned trip to Bath has had to be cancelled. Still to come is the Christmas Carol Concert at Cheltenham Town Hall at the beginning of December and a couple of days later the Christmas meal will be held at Fagins, previously known as The Four Mile House in Brookthorpe when those attending are sure to enjoy their meals.

After the formal part of the meeting we enjoyed a selection of nibbles and drinks while we tried to answer a quiz consisting of ten fairly easy questions and ten much harder ones which proved a challenge for some!

The December meeting will be held on 8th December when Dr Nicholas Henderson will be our speaker with his talk entitled “The Power Behind the Throne” which will have a Christmas theme and as we have previously heard two of Dr Henderson’s talks about Henry VIII and some of his wives we are sure this talk will be just as funny, informative and enjoyable as the others. As well as the speaker we will be enjoying an American Supper when members will bring along a contribution of food and enjoy a glass (or two) of mulled wine.

It was suggested that perhaps at the December meeting we could make a donation to charity rather than exchange Christmas cards but those who wish to bring cards can still do so. We will also have a table where magazines we have read can be swapped rather than going for recycling.

We were given a taster of what to expect in 2022 with the forming of a Luncheon Club and a Book Club. The trip to the Javelin Park Incinerator will hopefuly go ahead and there may even be room for husbands to go along. We have a team lined up to compete in the GFWI Quiz and hopefully also a skittles team. There will be some interesting speakers talking on subjects as diverse as Working as a Community Champion for Tesco, Gloucester Docks, Perfumes, SS Great Britain and as her last talk was so enjoyable we will have another visit from Kate Peake on Dressing the Georgian Lady. On a more local theme we will hear from one of our members, Caroline Meek, who will tell us about the history of Quedgeley. We can only hope that Covid lockdowns will not put an end to our plans for next year.

Quedgeley WI meets at 7.30pm at Quedgeley Village Hall on the second Wednesday of every month and always welcomes visitors and new members. More information can be found on facebook.com/quedgeleywi or our website www.quedgeleywi.co.uk where you will find meeting reports, more photographs and our programme for 2022.
